Dining Room Chair Makeover:

Before:
After:
Although both cushions are great by themselves, the new look this homeowner was going for no longer coordinated with the yellow and blue paisley covers.  We recovered the cushions with a muted tone-on-tone green fabric that allowed the chairs to blend well with their new environment.  It only took us three hours to re-cover eight chairs! The most amazing part of this project was the cost.  We picked up the fabric at Wal-Mart for just $2 per yard! You can do it yourself too!

Supplies Needed:

  • Heavy Duty Staple Gun
  • Pinking Shears (scissors with zigzag cut, keeps fabric from fraying)
  • Additional Batting Rolls (to add more cushion to the cushion if needed)
  • Fabric
    • Measure the length and width of each chair cushion and add 4 inches.  If you plan to pre-wash the fabric, add 6 inches.  Then total the amount of square inches you need and figure the yardage based on regular fabric which runs 45" wide or decorator fabric that runs 54" to 60" wide.  If there is a large pattern repeat, ask the sales person for help at the fabric store if you are going to center the pattern on each cushion.  You will need more fabric for this.

    How To:

    1. Turn the chair over and unscrew the cushion from the base.
    2. You can leave the existing fabric on if there are no holes or rips that will affect the next layer.  Also, if the new fabric is light in color, be sure the old one won't show through.  If you need to add more cushion to the seat, this is the time to cut and place the batting.
    3. Unroll the batting and flatten on a smooth surface.  Place the seat cushion upside down on the batting.  Cut around the edges leaving a generous five or six inches.
    4. Cut one piece of batting for each chair you will cover.

Total cost of project material - a mere $8.00!
